A Scrummy Cake...

So, this blog is a little late but I’ve finally got around to putting it up. Although the blog is late I only started planning this cake the week it was for. I think the look is simple but effective and with a little playable game of desktop rugby on top what more could you want. A couple of weeks ago it was my housemates 21st birthday, he plays rugby so I thought I’d make him a rugby themed cake. I originally wanted to make rugby themed cupcakes but the toppers wouldn’t have made it in time, if I was making a 21st cake I was putting in the effort. I ordered my cake board, desktop rugby and some green sprinkles. When I ordered the sprinkles never did I think they would look perfectly like Astro turf. I hope you enjoy reading about this cake.

Unlike my 2000 cake I just used my normal buttercream recipe purely because I didn’t have the time. I made two sponges, I think three would’ve given it a bit more height but I was happy with the rise on the cakes. For the cake mix I added 175g butter, sugar, self raising flour, 3 eggs and 1 teaspoon of baking powder to the bowl. I also added some vanilla flavouring, my nice Foodie Flavours one I’d thought I’d ran out of. I greased my deep 8inch tin I bought for Christmas and baked the cake for 30 minutes at 180 degrees. I let that cake cool and briefly before I took it out of the tin. Whilst this was cooling I made my second cake exactly the same way. I let both cakes cool completely before I started decorating it. One of the cakes had risen slightly unevenly so I levelled the top off so they both sat nicely on top of each other.

For the buttercream, I made double the usual amount to make sure I definitely had enough. I had left 500g unsalted butter to soften and then whisked it in the bowl. I gradually added 1kg icing sugar and some milk along with vanilla flavouring. My housemate was very simple in what they wanted, just wanted a plain vanilla cake. I put the first cake on the board and added some buttercream I even added some white chocolate chips for some texture and another flavour. I put the second cake on top and used the buttercream to do a crumb coat. I put the cake in the fridge once it was smooth and gave it 10 minutes. With the remaining buttercream I added some green food colouring. I covered the cake and with a smoother tried to get it as smooth as possible. I wasn’t 100% happy with it but I knew it was the best it was going to get. I added the green sprinkles on top and was so pleased with the effect of them. I placed the rugby game on top. I thought it was missing something but didn’t want to overdo the cake so settled for using a star nozzle to pipe along the base of the cake. I was a more pleased after I did this because I thought it really finished it off.

After I took my photos of the cake, it was hard to get the right angle. It was all Matt’s, it wasn’t long before the game of rugby was tested out. I think I liked this cake because it was so different to what I would normally do. The fact you could have some fun trying to score before finally enjoying the scrummy cake. I was going to try and make some puns in this blog but I think I covered enough of them in my Instagram post, you should totally follow @bakesbyhannahuk if you haven’t already. It’s been great being home this week, I’m so happy with what I’ve baked and I even got to try my Kitchen aid. I think the next couple of blogs are going to ones to watch. I hope you have a lovely week and enjoyed this rugby themed cake as much as I did.

Lots of love,

Hannah x
