Kinder Bueno Cake...

So, this week’s bake was the first uni bake of second year. I remember last year being nervous to bake for the first time at uni because I was worried what my flatmates would think. This year I baked on my first full day at the new house. The house this year is great because I didn’t have to be as cautious about how much baking stuff I brought with me. It’s no surprise that my baking drawer still needs to be organised, but there’s plenty of time for that. Just like last year I’ll no doubt acquire more baking stuff throughout this year, but I’m sure my flatmates won’t mind. I let Despina choose what I made this week, I’ve missed her a lot especially all her great ideas. She asked for a chocolate so I worked with that idea, so this week’s blog is how to make a Kinder Bueno cake.

I was actually really looking forward to baking this cake just to see how it turned out. I didn’t have a plan for this cake so just experimented with the decoration. Before my parents left they stocked up my baking supplies for me, which was great so I only needed to buy the chocolate for the flavouring and decoration. I debated doing a 2 tier or 4 tier cake, I settled on 2 because I didn’t want it to be too sweet and sickly. I melted 100g of milk chocolate in the microwave. In a separate bowl I added 175g self raising flour, caster sugar, butter, 3 eggs and 1 teaspoon of baking powder in a bowl. I let the melted chocolate cool slightly before I added it to the cake mixture. I added 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder and a dash of vanilla flavouring to the mix as well. The mixture tasted amazing even my housemates approved. I lined 2 8inch tins with baking paper and I weighed half the mixture into each one. I baked the cakes for 15 minutes at 175 degrees. I let the cakes cool before I decorated them.

One thing I’ve never made before is chocolate buttercream and I thought if I was making a chocolate cake, may as well go all out. I melted 50g of milk chocolate and but you can add more if you want a stronger taste. I used 250g softened butter and added 500g icing sugar. The buttercream was really quick to make and it had a really nice subtle taste of chocolate. I added some cocoa powder because I wanted it to be a little stronger. For the decoration once the cakes were completely cool, I spread a layer of buttercream on one of the cakes. I didn’t want it to be too thick. I added some crushed Kinder Buenos because I wanted to add some texture to the middle of the cake and an extra surprise. If you wanted you could also drizzle some chocolate in the middle or even add an alcohol drizzle. I added the second cake on top and filled a piping bag with a small star nozzle. I piped all over the top of the cake and added some lager swirls of buttercream around the outside. On top of each swirl I added a piece of Kinder Bueno. I thought it was missing something so I added some silver sprinkles. For a final touch I sprinkled gold glitter on top of each of the Kinder Bueno pieces. The hardest job was trying to get a picture that did it justice.

I think it’s safe to say the first bake of the uni year was a success. Its great being back at uni discussing baking ideas with Despina. We’ve decided this year that 12 Bakes of Christmas is going to happen in December. We also sat and planned so many Halloween bakes on my whiteboard along with other ideas in general. Let’s just say this uni year should have a lot of exciting bakes. I hope you have a lovely week.

Lots of love,

Hannah x
