Marvin the Monster...

So this week I made a Monster Cake! I think this is easily my favourite cake I’ve made. I was going to keep this cake until Halloween but I couldn’t wait that long to share it. After I made this cake I couldn’t stop smiling and I haven’t been this excited about a cake in a while. Cakes are always like a blank canvas and who doesn’t want the opportunity to let their creativity run wild and make their own monster cake? I’ve had this idea for a while that I wanted to make a monster cake but it’s been a case of finding time after starting my final year of uni. I am so happy I got the chance to make this cake, it wasn’t for any occasion other than to bring a bit of happiness.

For the cake I made three 8inch cakes, the day before I decorated my monster so I could focus on the decorating. For each cake I added 175g butter, self raising flour, caster sugar, 3 eggs and 1 teaspoon of baking powder. I had run out of vanilla flavouring so used some custard flavouring instead. I baked each cake for around 30 minutes at 175 degrees. Once they were baked I left them to cool and wrapped them in cling film. At this point I had no idea how I wanted my monster to look but I was still very excited.

The next day was when the real fun started, bringing my monster to life. I hadn’t decided on the colour scheme yet, I had far too many colours to pick from. I started by making the fondant additions for the monster. First was the eye using white, black and blue coloured fondant. I rolled a larger circle out of white then a slightly smaller one for blue and smaller again for black. I added a smaller little white ball on the eye. Next was the mouth, I rolled out a semi-circle of black fondant. I then cut out some triangles of white fondant to look like teeth. I used a little bit of water to stick the white on the black. If anything before I started adding the buttercream I wasn’t a huge fan of the mouth but then it all came to life when I added it to the cake. Next was the horns and I really wanted them to stand out, so I thought why not make them pink! I coloured some fondant pink and divided it equally into two sections to try and get them as similar as possible. As simple as it looked it took a while until I was happy. In the end though I add all the fondant pieces I needed to make my monster.

I then made a batch of buttercream beating 500g unsalted butter until light in colour and added 1kg icing sugar. I added a dash of milk and some custard flavouring. In the end I needed to make a little more buttercream with the ratio of 1:2. In between the layers I added some jam and did a crumb coat of the buttercream. I put the cake in the fridge for around 20minutes to chill. The next part was when it got really fun, adding the fur. I coloured some of the buttercream blue. I was debating between adding cool hair design on top or spots and went with spots. I wanted a nice bright colour so why not add some green spots. I had so much fun making this cake as you can probably tell. I put the blue in a larger grass nozzle and the green in a smaller one. I added a small amount of buttercream to stick the mouth on the front. I then began to pipe the buttercream pulling the nozzle away from the cake. I then added green spots randomly around the cake. The monster soon began to come to life. I continued this until the whole cake was covered and then placed the eye above the mouth. To finish the monster I added the horns and just admired what I had made.

I became really attached to this cake and it didn’t help that I wanted to name it either. I asked for suggestions on my Instagram and had some really good ones. Some of my favourites were Randall, Marvin, Todd, Barry and Spike, just to name a few. In the end I decided to call this monster cake Marvin after a vote on my Instagram. When it came to cutting into the cake I was actually so sad I couldn’t even do it myself. One thing I’ve grown to love even more about cakes is the reaction you get once you make one. I’ve never been this giddy about a cake before and it was just what I needed. I think everyone needs a monster cake in their life. I certainly didn’t imagine at the start of the week I’d have made such a cute monster and I wouldn’t change a thing about it. I kept taking more pictures to put off having to cut this cake and I took a lot. This is definitely my favourite cake to date. I hope you enjoyed reading about this monster cake. I think you can tell I enjoyed making it, people really should want monster cakes more often. I hope you have a brilliant week.

Lots of love,

Hannah xx
