Valentines Biscuits...

So, today is Valentine’s day, it seemed only right that I baked something with some connection. I don’t think you can beat some love heart biscuits. I remember last year I put so much effort into making a Love Heart themed cake and this year was a bit more last minute. I thought I was going to do my blog on my housemates birthday cake, but I’m going to save that for a few more weeks. The main focus of this blog was the use of glitter in the biscuits but I also made another batch where I experimented with flavours and practiced my piping for next weekend’s blog. The striped biscuits were inspired by Preppy Kitchens biscuits that I saw on Instagram. The Ombre ones were something I thought I would try and see what happened.

For the biscuits, I creamed 100g caster sugar and butter that was softened together. once this was incorporated I added 1 egg and some vanilla extract. Once it was combined I added 275g plain flour and used my hands to bring it into a dough. I then separated the dough into two parts. I coloured one part pink and left the other part plain. I put both balls wrapped into clingfilm to chill. I preheated my oven to 170 degrees and lined by baking sheet with baking paper. I rolled out the both doughs and on top of the pink one added glitter and rolled it on top. I then cut the dough into strips and alternated each colour to create the two tone biscuits. I used my heart cutter and cut out 4 biscuits from this. Obviously, this depends on the size of your cutter. I really just wanted to get the effect for me 4 was enough. I then decided to mix the rest of the dough together to create a marble effect. From one mix, I made 18 biscuits. I baked them for 8 minutes and they were the perfect colour and texture. I was so happy with how they looked, the glitter in them looked really cool.

For the second lot, my best friend Charlotte was around taste testing for her biscuits next week. I made the same biscuit dough again this time not adding vanilla extract. I split the dough in half, flavouring one batch passionfruit and the other lemon. I was very intrigued as to how the passionfruit ones would taste and they were actually really good. I used these biscuits to practice some piping because it's not something I do a lot. I’m slightly apprehensive how they are going to turn out next week but you’ll have to come back and see if there are any piping disasters.

I remember last year when the blog was very new and I loved planning my ideas then for big events like Valentines. From the stained glass biscuits of last year and the love heart cake, which was my first time using fondant. It’s great to be able to see where my strengths have improved. I’m pretty sure in the future I’ll make a love heart cake again just to show how much I’ve changed. Above you can see my cupcakes from 2 years ago and my bakes from last year, I like to think they've got better but I'm happy regardless with where I'm going. I hope you all have a lovely Valentines whether you are in a relationship or happy loving yourself. Valentine or not you can always take happiness from this little Cuddle Monster.

Lots of love,

Hannah x
